Hakim’s Bookstore & Gift Shop is an independent bookstore specializing in African American literature, history, culture, and education. Founded by Dawud Hakim in 1959, the West Philadelphia store carries books for adults and children covering subjects such as Black history, biographies, religion, civil rights, holistic health, and cultural identity. Shoppers can also find greeting cards, calendars, gifts, and other Afrocentric merchandise. Now operated by the founder’s family, Hakim’s continues its long-standing mission of making Black literature and historical knowledge accessible to Philadelphia readers.
